A child's earliest years are arguably the most crucial period of a human's life. In the first five years, a child experiences rapid growth and development, a time that will dictate long-term health outcomes, emotional development and social development. Therefore, children need collaborative support from families, education, and healthcare professionals during this period to reach their full potential.
To recognize and honor this crucial period, the South Carolina Department of Social Services, ABC Quality, and early childhood professionals from around the nation will honor young children with the annual Week of the Young Child® celebration. Sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association, the Week of the Young Child® is also being recognized locally by the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children (SCAEYC) to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize early childhood programs and services like ABC Quality that meet those needs.
The Week of the Young Child® also recognizes that children's opportunities are our responsibilities. This week allows families and child care providers a time to recommit themselves to ensuring that every child experiences the type of early environment—at home, at child care, at school, and in the community—that promotes the needs of young children, their families, and the early childhood programs that serve them.
NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child® in 1971, recognizing that early childhood (birth through age 8) lays the foundation for children's success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child® is a time to plan how we—as citizens of a community, state, and nation—will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.
Between April 1-7, child care providers and other educational professionals nationwide will hold public awareness campaigns and special events to remind everyone of the importance of quality early child care and education. In South Carolina, the Week of the Young Child® is one more way to support early learning for all children and to recognize the early childhood professionals who make a tremendous impact on the children and families of the Palmetto State.
